6.08.010 DEFINITIONS:

Whenever in this chapter the following terms are used, they shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section unless otherwise apparent from the context:

MEMBER:

Member of the police reserve.

RESERVE:

The police reserve. (1972 Code § 2.32.010)

6.08.020 CREATION:

The police reserve of the police department of the city is created. The reserve shall consist of such number of persons as the chief of police shall appoint. (1972 Code § 2.32.020)

6.08.030 DUTIES:

The duties of the reserve shall be:

A.    To assist the legally constituted police department of the city under the orders and directions of the chief of police in the enforcement of law and order during any and all emergencies declared to exist within the city;

B.    To render volunteer police service upon occasions when, in the opinion of the chief of police, such augmentation to the regular department is essential to the public welfare and safety; and

C.    To exercise police powers when circumstances make it expedient to preserve order or to protect life and property pending the arrival of regular police officers. (1972 Code § 2.32.030)

6.08.040 POWERS OF PEACE OFFICER:

In the enforcement of all laws of the United States of America, the state, all ordinances of the county and the city, and in the performance of such other duties as may be designated by the chief of police, every authorized member shall be deemed to have all powers of a peace officer as provided in the California Penal Code. (1972 Code § 2.32.040)

6.08.050 BENEFITS FOR INJURY OR DEATH ON DUTY:

Members suffering injury (or their beneficiaries if the member suffers death) arising out of and in the course of duties assigned to them under the provisions of this chapter are entitled to such medical care, hospitalization and other benefits as the city may provide, or to such benefits as the members or their beneficiaries shall be entitled to under the workers’ compensation laws of the state. (1972 Code § 2.32.050)

6.08.060 RESERVE RULES AND REGULATIONS:

The chief of police of the city shall promulgate and establish rules and regulations governing the Gonzales police reserve which shall cover qualifications and standards for membership, uniforms and equipment, rate of compensation, service requirements and such other subjects as are deemed necessary. The rules and regulations shall be approved by the city manager prior to their taking effect. (1972 Code § 2.32.060)
