BUS ZONES:

7-24.1 Definition:

As used in this section:

Bus shall mean any motorbus, motor coach, trackless trolley coach or passenger stage used as a common carrier of passengers over a fixed route for a fixed fare. (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.2 Authority To Establish Zones:

The city traffic engineer is hereby authorized to establish bus zones opposite curb space for the loading and unloading of buses or common carriers of passengers and to determine the location thereof subject to the directives and limitations set forth in this section. (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.3 Length:

No bus zone shall exceed sixty feet (60') in length, except that when satisfactory evidence has been presented to the city traffic engineer showing the necessity therefor, the city traffic engineer may extend bus zones not to exceed a total length of one hundred feet (100'). (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.4 Location:

Bus zones shall normally be established on the far side of an intersection, and no bus zone shall be established opposite and to the right of a safety zone. (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.5 Identification:

The city traffic engineer shall paint a red line stenciled with white letters “NO STANDING”, together with the words “BUS ZONE” upon the top or side of all curbs and places specified as a bus zone. (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.6 Vehicles Other Than Bus Prohibited:

No person shall stop, stand or park any vehicle except a bus in a bus zone. (Code 1972 §31-1)

7-24.7 Layover Points:

The traffic engineer is hereby authorized to determine and mark “layover” points at any place in the city where, in the opinion of the traffic engineer the layover points are necessary or proper where persons authorized to transport passengers by bus for hire in the city over fixed routes shall be permitted to park or leave not more than one bus at a time for a period not to exceed twenty (20) minutes. 7-24.8 Bus Lines Required To File Timetable:

All bus lines that pick up and discharge passengers on the streets in the city shall file with the city council a detailed and accurate schedule or timetable of all trips made by the bus lines which pass through or along any of the streets of the city. (Code 1972 §31-2)
