18.40.010 HISTORICAL BUILDING CODE OF THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ.
This chapter constitutes the Historical Building Code of the city of Santa Cruz.

18.40.020 DEFINITIONS.
The following definitions apply to this chapter:
(1) “Qualified historical building” means any structure, collection of structures, and their associated sites which have importance to the history, architecture, or culture of the Santa Cruz area and which have been included on any existing or future national or state historical register which has been officially adopted by a governmental agency, or which have been included in the Santa Cruz Historical Building Survey, or which have been designated as a historical landmark by the city of Santa Cruz, or which are located within a historic district designated by the city of Santa Cruz.

18.40.030 ADOPTION OF HISTORICAL BUILDING CODE.
The following documents are hereby adopted as part of the Historical Building Code of the city of Santa Cruz:
CCR T 24, Part 8, The 2022 California Historical Building Code (hereafter CHBC) is hereby adopted as part of the Historical Building Code of the city of Santa Cruz. One copy of the CHBC referred to above shall be maintained on file in the office of the building official, for use and examination by the public.

18.40.040 EFFECT ON ZONING ORDINANCE.
If there is any conflict between the provisions of Chapter 8-10 of the CHBC and the provisions of the city of Santa Cruz zoning ordinance (Title 24), then the provisions of the zoning ordinance shall prevail.

18.40.050 AMENDMENTS TO THE CHBC.
To the extent required by law, the CHBC adopted by the state of California and becoming effective after January 1, 2023, shall be effective in the city of Santa Cruz. To the extent authorized by law, the city of Santa Cruz shall have the authority to adopt ordinances pertaining to historical buildings which vary from the CHBC or impose requirements in addition to those imposed by the CHBC.
