6.20.010 Premises to be kept in clean and sanitary condition.
All buildings, structures, places and/or premises whatsoever in the city of South Gate, California, shall be placed, and shall continuously be kept, by the owner, person, firm or corporation in charge, or the occupant, thereof, in a clean and sanitary condition and kept free from flies breeding, vermin and rats.

6.20.020 Public nuisance declared—Abatement.
All buildings, structures, places and/or premises or any parts thereof within the city that are breeding flies, vermin or rats, or are infested with fly-breeding, vermin, or rats, are hereby declared to be and are public nuisances and the health officer of the city of South Gate, California, and/or the health officer of the county of Los Angeles, or his duly authorized representative or agent, is hereby empowered to abate the same, or cause the same to be abated, either by bringing an action for that purpose in any court of competent jurisdiction or by summarily abating the same if, in the judgment or opinion of said city health officer, or county health officer, or his duly authorized representative or agent, the public peace, health, safety and/or welfare requires such summary abatement.

6.20.030 Dumping or accumulation of wastes prohibited.
No rubbish, waste, refuse, garbage or offal shall be placed, left, dumped, or permitted to accumulate or remain in, on or about any building, structure, place, or premises in the city of South Gate, California, so that the same is or may afford food and/or harboring places for rats, or a breeding place for rats, vermin or flies.

6.20.040 Penalty for violation.
Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the provisions of this chapter shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or by imprisonment in the city jail of the city of South Gate, or in the county jail of the county of Los Angeles, California, as the committing magistrate may direct, for a period of not more than six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment in the discretion of the court.
