2.64.010 Established.
There is established and created a police department of the city. (Ord. 1822 § 1, 1976; Ord. 960 § 1, 1947).
2.64.020 Duties.
It shall be the duty of the police department to enforce all ordinances duly enacted and passed by the city council, and to do all things necessary for the prosecution of offenders of the ordinances in a court of competent jurisdiction. (Ord. 1822 § 1, 1976; Ord. 960 § 2, 1947).
2.64.030 Police chief – Appointment and removal.
The police department shall have a police chief who shall not be subject to civil service provisions or Chapter 2.68 MVMC, and who shall be appointed by the mayor, and who shall be subject to the provisions of Chapter 2.80 MVMC. (Ord. 2763 § 1, 1996; Ord. 1822 § 1, 1976; Ord. 960 § 3, 1947).
2.64.040 Police chief – Powers and duties authorized.
The police chief shall be in general charge of the police department. The police chief shall, subject to the approval of the mayor, promulgate such rules and regulations pertaining to the administration of the police department as he may deem necessary and proper. The police chief shall employ, subject to the approval of the mayor, such additional personnel including auxiliary patrolmen as shall be necessary to perform the duties referred to in this chapter. 2.64.050 Police chief – Bond required.
The police chief, before entering upon the duties of his office, shall execute a surety bond to the city in the penal sum of $5,000, conditioned for the faithful performance of his duties. (Ord. 1822 § 1, 1976; Ord. 960 § 5, 1947).
2.64.060 Police chief and personnel – Compensation.
The police chief and such additional personnel as may be employed in the police department shall receive such compensation as the council shall provide from year to year in its annual budget ordinance. (Ord. 1822 § 1, 1976; Ord. 960 § 6, 1947).
