12.20.010 Uniform system.

There is hereby established a uniform system of numbering houses and buildings fronting on all streets, avenues, drives, lanes, courts and public ways (hereinafter referred to as streets) in the village of Arena, Wisconsin, and all houses and buildings shall be numbered in accordance with the provisions of this chapter. 12.20.020 Official house numbering map.

The numbering of all houses and buildings fronting on all streets in the village of Arena, Wisconsin, shall be determined by reference to the official house numbering map which is incorporated by reference into this chapter as if fully set forth herein. This official house numbering map shall be kept on file in the office of the village clerk and shall be open to inspection by any person at reasonable hours upon request, during the office hours of the clerk. When a new number is assigned it shall be posted to the official house numbering map referred to in this section. [Prior code § 4-6-2].

12.20.030 Number notification.

It shall be the duty of the village clerk to inform any party applying therefor of the number or numbers belonging or embraced within the limits of a lot or property as provided in this chapter. In case of doubt as to the proper number to be assigned to any building, the village clerk shall determine the number of such building. [Prior code § 4-6-3].

12.20.040 Installation.

(a) When a house or building has been assigned its respective number or numbers, the owner or occupant shall place or cause to be placed in the location required hereunder the number or numbers assigned under the uniform system provided for in this chapter.

(b) Such number or numbers shall be placed within 20 days after the assigning of the proper number. The numbers shall not be less than three inches in height.

(c) The numbers shall be conspicuously placed immediately above, on or at the side of the proper door of each building or, in the case of multiple entrances, at the corner of the building to the left as the building is faced in such a manner that the number can be seen plainly from the street. Whenever any building is situated more than 50 feet from the street line, the number of such building shall be conspicuously displayed at the street line, near the walk, driveway or common entrance to such building and upon the gate post, fence, tree, post or other appropriate place so as to be easily discernible from the sidewalk. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to prohibit the use of additional sets of numbers at other locations on the premises. [Prior code § 4-6-4].

12.20.050 New buildings.

Whenever any house, building or structure shall be erected or located in the village of Arena, in order to preserve the continuity and uniformity of numbers of the houses, buildings and structures, it shall be the duty of the owner to procure the correct number or numbers as designated from the village clerk for the said property and to immediately fasten the said number or numbers so assigned upon said building as provided by this chapter. No building permit shall be issued to any house, building or structure until the owner has procured from the village clerk the official number of the premises. [Prior code § 4-6-5].

12.20.060 Enforcement.

It shall be the duty of all police officers of the village of Arena to report a violation of any provision of this chapter. [Prior code § 4-6-6].

12.20.070 Violations.

If the owner or occupant of any building required to be numbered by this chapter shall neglect for the period of 20 days to duly attach and maintain the proper number on such building, the village clerk shall serve upon said owner or occupant a notice requiring such owner or occupant to properly number the same, and if he or she neglects to do so for 10 days after the service of such notice, he or she shall be deemed to have violated this chapter. Upon conviction thereof, he shall forfeit not less than $25.00 nor more than $1,000 together with the costs of prosecution. Each day that the violation continues to exist shall constitute a separate offense. [Ord. dated 3/6/12 § 29. Prior code § 4-6-7].
