2.20.010 Nominations.

A qualified elector who shall have resided in the city during the 12 months immediately preceding the election may be nominated for an elective city office. Nomination shall be by petition specifying the position sought on forms prescribed by state law. The petition shall be signed by not fewer than 25 electors who are legal residents of the city.

No elector shall sign more than one petition for the same elective position. If an elector signs more than one such petition, only the signature on the first petition filed with the city elections officer shall be valid.

No person shall be qualified to accept nomination or be a candidate for more than one city office to be filled in the same election. No person shall be qualified to hold more than one elective city office at a time. [Ord. 622 § 1, 1993].

2.20.020 Filing of petition.

All nomination papers comprising a petition shall be assembled and filed with the city elections officer not earlier than the fifteenth day after the date of the primary election and not later than the seventieth day before the date of the general election. The elections officer shall record on the face of each paper comprising a petition the exact time and date the petition is filed.

The elections officer shall determine whether the petition contains the required number of signatures of qualified electors and whether the petition otherwise conforms to law, and upon such determination shall so notify the candidate in writing within five days after the filing. If the elections officer determines that the petition does not contain the required number of signatures or does not otherwise conform to law, the elections officer shall immediately return it to the person who filed it, certifying in writing wherein the petition is insufficient. A deficient petition may be amended and filed again as a new petition, or a different petition for the same candidate may be filed, within the regular time for filing nomination petitions. The elections officer shall not accept any petition, including an amended petition, after 5:00 p.m. on the seventieth day before the election. [Ord. 858 § 1, 2024; Ord. 622 § 2, 1993].

2.20.030 Acceptance of nomination.

A qualified candidate shall, within five regular business days after being notified of their nomination, file with the city elections officer a signed acceptance of nomination in such form as the elections officer shall require. Upon receipt of such acceptance of nomination the elections officer shall cause the qualified candidate’s name to be printed on the election ballots.

The original petition of nomination for a successful candidate at an election shall be preserved in the official city records until the term of office for which the candidate is elected expires. [Ord. 622 § 3, 1993].
