10.12.010 Stop streets—Designated.

Subject to the authority of the director of highways to install, operate, maintain and control traffic, the following streets of the city are designated as stop streets at which the operators of motor vehicles, bicycles or any conveyance shall come to a complete stop prior to proceeding:

Locust Way at Hospital Way

Canyon Road at Hospital Way

Plaza Way at Highway 97

4th St NW two-way stop at Highway 97

Brewster Triangle at 4th St NW

4th Street NW at Main Avenue

4th St SW at Main Avenue

3rd Street NW; 2nd Street NW; and 1st St NW two-way stops at 1st Avenue NW

3rd Street NW; 2nd Street NW; and 1st Street NW at Main St

3rd Street SW; 2nd St SW; and 1st St SW at Main St

3rd St SW; 2nd St SW; and 1st St SW two-way stop at 1st Ave SW

10.12.020 Stop streets—Warning device installation.

The city shall have installed at the stop streets as designated in Section 10.12.010 a warning device stating the word “Stop.” (Ord. 350 § 2, 1976)

10.12.030 Stop streets—Designation authorized.

In the future the city council is authorized to add additional stop streets to those provided for in Section 10.12.010, or to delete any of the stop streets when the necessity therefor is shown. Such additions or deletions may be made by resolution duly passed by the council and approved by the mayor. (Ord. 350 § 7, 1976)

10.12.040 Arterial streets—Designated—Stop required.

Arterial streets are designated as follows, and all vehicles approaching such arterial streets upon intersecting streets are required to come to a full stop before proceeding onto such arterial streets:

Hospital Way;

4th Street;

1st Avenue;

Main Street;

2nd Avenue;

3rd Avenue;

4th Avenue;

6th Avenue;

8th Avenue. (Ord. 350 § 5, 1976)

10.12.050 Play streets—Designation and sign placement authorized—Operation restrictions.

The city council shall have authority to declare any street or part thereof a play street and to place appropriate signs or devices in the roadway indicating and helping to protect the same. Whenever authorized signs are erected indicating any street or part thereof as a play street, no person shall drive a vehicle upon any such street or portion thereof except operators of vehicles having business or whose residences are within such closed area, and then any such operator shall exercise the greatest care in driving on any such street or portion thereof. 10.12.060 Required stopping and yielding.

It is unlawful for the operator of a vehicle to emerge from any alley, driveway, building exit, private way or private property, or from off the roadway of any public highway onto the roadway of a public highway or across a sidewalk or into the sidewalk area extending across any such alley, driveway, building exit, private way or private property, without bringing such vehicle to a full stop and yielding the right-of-way to all pedestrians upon such sidewalk and all vehicles upon such public highway. No vehicle shall back onto or out of an alley, except which same is obstructed. No driver shall enter any street at any point other than a street intersection at a rate of speed exceeding five miles an hour, nor operate a vehicle in excess of fifteen miles per hour in any alley. 10.12.070 Emergency vehicles exempt.

The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to authorized emergency vehicles which shall include police cars, state patrol cars, ambulances or doctors’ cars when on official business and urgent calls. (Ord. 350 § 6, 1976)

10.12.080 Violation—Penalty.

Violation of this chapter shall be deemed an infraction and punishment for a violation of this chapter shall be in accordance with Brewster Municipal Code Section 1.16.010(B). (Ord. 553 § 11, 1992; Ord. 350 § 8, 1976)
